Telehealth in VA Clinics and Hospitals

VA telehealth in clinics and hospitals allows Veterans to interact with specialists remotely, while on-site medical teams provide direct, hands-on care or support for a comprehensive care experience.

Telehealth in Clinics

Using video and remote physical exam technologies, your provider or specialist at a VA Medical Center can be part of your appointment remotely while you’re at a conveniently located VA community-based outpatient clinic. They can assess your clinical concerns, discuss your care options, and guide an on-site provider or technician as they conduct your in-person exam.

Another type of telehealth, called asynchronous telehealth, can help you get care more efficiently. Images, sounds, or video are captured at a clinic near you and sent electronically to a provider at another VA location for review and recommendations. This makes it possible for you to avoid long travel or wait times for things like a skin concern, which can be photographed and reviewed by a dermatologist remotely.

Veterans who require hospital care can also benefit from telehealth during their stay.

Telehealth is used in VA hospitals to best serve Veterans who have critical or some other specialized care needs. It allows providers at equipped hospitals to consult with select specialists at other VA locations.
